Time passed quickly as we got up to date with the last 20 years +. Kay loves the Peak district and was keen to organize exertion. After a trip to the nearest town , Leek, to get my specs repaired after I stood on them, we headed out to Peveril Castle. This ruin dates back to the 12 century when William the Conqueror stationed his representatives here in the north to keep an eye on the proletariet and ensure the supply of metals from the area. We then went on to the village of Eyam. This was the "Plague Village" in Geraldine Brook's "Years of Wonder". In 1665-6 the plague got to Eyam from London via some clothes for the heroines tailor husband and infected him then progressively decimated the villagers. The minister backed by the local aristocracy quarantined the village. Food and other necessities for the villagers were brought and left on a stone. The villagers made some depressions in the stone and left money soaked in vinegar. We saw the exact spots on our walk. The peak district is stone and all housing, even recently built, is made of stone. The countryside is made up of very green fields with lots of cows and the shaggy sheep. It is dotted with villages of stone houses connected by a maze of roadways and footpaths. Even the sat nav lady didn't have sufficient detail in her memory banks to get it right.
