Made it to Fountainbleau on Friday and found it very extreme in the decoration. This was another of Francis 1's extravaganzas enhanced by royalty over the centuries until Napoleon 1 really gave it a makeover. He was forced to abdicate and go into exile from these very stairs to the island of Elba. He made a come back but another unsuccessful campaign saw him spending his last years in St Helena which is somewhere off the coast of Africa. What a series of megalomaniacs both France and England had as rulers.
